GORGE DOWNWIND WORKSHOP

April Zilg & Puakea Designs:

Stevenson, WA
July 13
9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Cost: $350

A one-day OC1/OC2 downwind workshop focused on helping paddlers better understand, read, and connect with moving water in the Columbia River Gorge.

This clinic is designed for paddlers who already have basic open water experience and want to improve their ability to:

  • catch and connect bumps
  • move directionally across the water
  • read energy and timing
  • improve efficiency and confidence in real conditions

The Gorge is one of the best classrooms in the world for learning downwind. The consistent wind, organized swell, and long glides create an environment where paddlers can develop real skills quickly… if they know what to look for.

This workshop is not about surviving conditions.

It is about learning how to work with the water instead of fighting it.

We will begin the day with approximately two hours of land-based instruction covering:

  • downwind fundamentals
  • bump timing and acceleration
  • angle control and directional surfing
  • linking bumps
  • reading swell patterns and energy lines
  • pacing and physiology
  • decision-making in changing conditions
  • self-rescue and group safety considerations

Following the land session, participants will complete two downwind runs (conditions permitting) with direct coaching and feedback throughout the day.

One of the biggest breakthroughs in downwind paddling comes when athletes stop trying to overpower the water and start learning how to move with it. Fewer, better-timed strokes. Better positioning. Better decisions. Longer glides.

That is the goal of this workshop.

This clinic is intended for intermediate paddlers and adventurous beginners with strong remount skills, good fitness, and prior open water experience.

Participants should be able to:

  • remount confidently in open water and high winds
  • paddle 10–12 miles comfortably
  • manage their craft independently in wind and swell
  • carry and manage boat and required safety equipment

Required Gear:

  • OC1 and rudder appropriate for downwind conditions
  • paddle + spare paddle
  • leash
  • PFD
  • hydration
  • whistle
  • phone in waterproof case
  • thermal protection appropriate for conditions
