Let’s just say it out loud.
Downwind is hard… at first.
It feels chaotic. Loud. Fast. Like the water is making decisions without you. Most paddlers’ first real downwind experience is a mix of adrenaline, confusion, and “why is this thing suddenly going sideways?”
It does not have to be that way.
This two-day beginner clinic is designed to introduce you to downwind the right way. Protected water. Inside the sound. Real conditions, but managed intelligently. You’ll get multiple runs each day, real-time coaching, safety boat support, and structured progression that builds skill instead of just survival instincts.
Because this is the truth:
Downwind done well is one of the most powerful experiences in paddle sports.
Boats accelerate with less effort. The water starts to feel organized instead of chaotic. You stop reacting and start choosing. You see a bump, move your feet, take two strokes, and you’re flying.
And yes — this downwind clinic will make you faster than AI generated Puakea team riders in rainbow boats sharing a bump. If you’ve seen the gloriously cheesy image on this page, you know exactly what I mean. Perfect hair. Perfect spray. Perfect ama flight. Zero fear. That’s not how real learning looks.
Real learning looks like skill.
And skill starts with safety.
The Non-Negotiable
You must be able to consistently and quickly remount your craft in calm water before attending.
Not once. Not eventually. Not “most of the time.”
Consistently.
Remounting is not a side skill. It is the foundation of confidence. If you cannot get back on your boat efficiently, your brain will stay in protection mode. And when your brain is protecting, you are not surfing left. You are not flying the ama. You are not selecting the right bump. You are leaning away from the fall.
Fitness is required — not so you can hammer at the wrong moment — but so that when you do fall in rough water, you can remount quickly and get back in the game without panic.
Confidence comes from capacity.
So please:
- Be fit.
- Be comfortable in open water.
- Be aware of how your body moves in space.
- Have practiced basic boat handling and remounting before you arrive.
This is a beginner downwind camp. It is not a beginner paddling camp.
What We’ll Cover
- Reading wind and water inside the sound
- Route selection and safe run planning
- Group dynamics and communication
- When to go, when to wait, when to let a bump pass
- Linking bumps with intention
- Ama control and directional surfing
- Efficient remount strategy in real conditions
You’ll complete multiple downwind runs each day, get individual feedback, and learn how to make better decisions in moving water.
Neoprene separates are required for this April camp. The water is cold. Smart paddlers dress for the swim, not the launch photo.
The Goal
Not survival.
Skill.
We want you focused on surfing left because you see the line not because you’re bracing for impact.
We want you flying the ama because you chose to, not because the wind forced you there.
We want you confident enough to push your edges, because you know you can get back on your boat if things go sideways.
Downwind is one of the most rewarding skills in paddle sports. It changes how you see water. It makes you faster everywhere. It makes you braver everywhere.
And it does not have to take years of trial and error.
Come learn it the right way.

Weather & Conditions Policy
This is a downwind camp.
We want wind.
However, I do not control the weather. If there is no wind, we adapt.
- Camps will proceed in rain, wind, or variable conditions unless the environment becomes unsafe.
- If there is insufficient wind for traditional downwind runs, we will train in small wind swell, boat wake, technical water, or protected areas to develop the same skills: bump reading, timing, boat control, ama management, and linking.
- If conditions become unsafe, sessions may be modified, relocated, or adjusted within the scheduled camp dates.
No refunds will be issued due to lack of wind or weather-related modifications.
If the camp must be canceled entirely due to extreme or hazardous conditions that prevent safe operation, participants will receive either:
- A credit toward a future camp, or
- A refund minus unrecoverable expenses.
Host Cancellation
If the camp is canceled by the host for reasons unrelated to weather (e.g., illness or emergency), participants will receive a full refund.
