Wrightsville Beach, NC
You already know downwind isn’t random.
You’ve felt moments where everything lines up. The hull accelerates. The noise drops. The boat lifts and runs. And for a few seconds, you’re not fighting the water. You’re working with it.
And then it disappears.
This camp is about making those moments intentional instead of accidental.
Open-ocean downwind introduces new variables. Ocean swell interacts with wind. Bumps form and collapse differently. Beach launches require timing and commitment. Lines open and close quickly. The paddlers who progress aren’t stronger. They’re more precise in how they read, position, and respond.
Over two days, we’ll move into open-ocean conditions and refine the skills that allow you to work with moving water instead of reacting to it.
You’ll complete multiple downwind runs each day, receive direct coaching on the water, and develop a clearer understanding of how to select lines, maintain glide, and link bumps with less effort.
Because at this level, progress is no longer about surviving the run.
It’s about controlling it.
The Non-Negotiable
You must already have downwind experience and be comfortable paddling in open-ocean conditions.
You should be able to remount your craft efficiently in open water and manage yourself confidently in wind, swell, and moving water.
This environment accelerates learning, but it assumes a foundation. When that foundation exists, skill develops quickly.
What We’ll Cover
- Reading ocean swell and understanding how it interacts with wind
- Beach launches and landings in real conditions
- Line selection and positioning for efficient runs
- Linking bumps with less effort and greater consistency
- Maintaining glide instead of chasing speed
- Boat control, ama management, and directional surfing
- Decision-making in dynamic, changing water
You’ll receive individual feedback throughout the weekend to help you understand what’s happening beneath you and how to apply adjustments immediately.
Neoprene separates are required. The water is cold. Dress for immersion, not comfort on shore.
The Goal
Not just completing downwind runs.
Mastering them.
We want you seeing lines earlier.
Using less effort for more speed.
Feeling calmer in faster water.
And leaving with the ability to repeat those skills anywhere you paddle.
Downwind, done well, is one of the most rewarding experiences in paddle sports.
It turns chaos into structure. Effort into glide. Reaction into choice.
Come refine what you’ve started.

Weather & Conditions Policy
This is a downwind camp.
We want wind.
However, I do not control the weather. If there is no wind, we adapt.
- Camps will proceed in rain, wind, or variable conditions unless the environment becomes unsafe.
- If there is insufficient wind for traditional downwind runs, we will train in small wind swell, boat wake, technical water, or protected areas to develop the same skills: bump reading, timing, boat control, ama management, and linking.
- If conditions become unsafe, sessions may be modified, relocated, or adjusted within the scheduled camp dates.
No refunds will be issued due to lack of wind or weather-related modifications.
If the camp must be canceled entirely due to extreme or hazardous conditions that prevent safe operation, participants will receive either:
- A credit toward a future camp, or
- A refund minus unrecoverable expenses.
Host Cancellation
If the camp is canceled by the host for reasons unrelated to weather (e.g., illness or emergency), participants will receive a full refund.
